Medicinal Plant App Development
Access a comprehensive database of Guatemala's medicinal plants. Support local communities and promote safe usage of traditional remedies.
Guatemala lacks a comprehensive publication on medicinal plant species. It is our goal, along with several partners from the public and private spheres, to develop anew National Vademecum of Medicinal Species in a mechanism that makes scientific systematizing more easy, collaborative, while facilitating consultation to the larger public. Therefore, we aim to acquire funding for the development of an App of Medicinal Species from Guatemala, starting with all the repositories from prior research and expanding through collaborative networks. This App will have functionalities requested by the Councils of Elders such as recordings in traditional languages concerning traditional uses of each plants, reference to community-led initiatives that generate income to traditional healers working with medicinal plants, among other key features. It also aims to become a useful tool for public health practitioners to aid in decision-making when faced with questions from clients in health posts and health centers related to toxicity and safe usage of local medicinal plants.
